Good stuff. This has been a great series. Looking forward to seeing how your party handles its downtime, shopping, carousing, etc.

That critical hit definitely turned the tide of battle, especially with the queen having a cure wounds spell locked and loaded. Are these poor saps getting level 2 anytime soon?

They should be after this chapter. They'll get back to town and have gold to spend on carousing, which should give them enough experience to level up. Gul'shruk will also be looking to get some chain mail, which should give him a really nice bump to his AC.

Now I just have to hope that no one rolls a one for their hit point.

I really need to re-read the level up section of ShadowDark. I don't think I quite understand how it works. Looking forward to seeing how the level ups go for the crew!

It's just a tad noodly but once I figured it out I really like it. You get no XP for fighting, you get some XP for finding treasure (lots if it is very rare), but a lot of your XP comes from spending gold/time to carouse.

I dislike the lack of XP for fighting, but the XP gain for treasure is growing on me. Makes sense that you'd get more for spending it, I guess.

I stopped giving out XP for fighting since I got sick of it with Pathfinder almost 10 years ago. I've used almost exclusively some kind of milestone leveling system since then but I do really like the XP for treasure find and gold spend for the OSR style games as well.

XP for killing things meant my players often didn't bother to try and avoid fights. They didn't actively seek them out but they were pretty quick to escalate.
